“Mass timber” construction- using wood as a low-carbon, cost-effective replacement for steel and concrete in multi-story buildings, is increasingly garnering attention and use in the United States. In New Hampshire, mass timber construction has particular relevance as a potential use of the state’s abundant forest resources and as a strategy for reducing the carbon intensity of new construction.

This workshop will introduce mass timber technology and examples of its use in situations relevant to New Hampshire cities and towns. What are the types of mass timber? When can mass timber be used, and what is allowable under current codes? How does it compare to steel and concrete in performance and cost?

The session will also discuss the climate and carbon impacts of building will mass timber, and how New Hampshire’s forests, landowners, and forest sector could participate as the mass timber sector grows.
