Northern New England AIA COTE Leadership Summit

AIA Vermont, a Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, is hosting the Northern New England AIA COTE Leadership Summit with the Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire AIA Chapters. The event will be held in Burlington, Vermont on June 8 and 9, 2017.  The summit will feature an evening welcome keynote lecture—open to the public—by Clark Brockman of SERA Architects as well as a full-day workshop of 100+ invited industry sustainability leaders who will focus on facilitating effective change for enhanced sustainability in our communities and at district scales.

This year’s full-day workshop invites demonstrated sustainability leaders from our region to come together to discuss, collaborate, and strategize next steps related to our region’s biggest obstacles for advancing sustainability efforts at the community scale. A primary goal will be to collectively address and mitigate climate change effects through design, advocacy, community organization and policy.  Challenges that professionals face every day, in their practices, for the advancement of sustainability at the community scale, will be examined.  Communication strategies for effective change, beneficial negotiation and consensus building among community stakeholders and policy makers will be explored, tested and scrutinized.  The top leaders from our region will engage in backcasting exercises to help chart the course for New England communities to continue to advance sustainability, meet the AIA challenge to make districts Net Zero by 2030, and achieve other similar community sustainability metrics effectively.  Current AIA policies and standards will be reviewed and discussed as they relate to sustainability practices as well as to explore how they can be further adapted to advance and address this challenge.
