2010 IDID Conference Sustainable Design: From LEED to Living Buildings
The Dartmouth/IDID Sustainable Design Symposium is focused on innovation in sustainability and the built environment for architects, landscape architects, engineers, developers, contractors, real estate brokers, bankers, building owners, students, faculty, staff, and others to open communications between the disciplines and promote environmentally responsible development.
The theme for 2010 is "From LEED to Living Buildings." The symposium is aimed at advancing and promoting the use of sustainable design principles in the renovation and construction of buildings on college campuses and in our communities. For this 2-day event, we will bring nationally-recognized architects, engineers, and design experts to campus to participate in a series of panels and workshops.
On the first day of the event, attendees will hear from leading thinkers in the field about:
• the global imperative for more sustainable buildings, grounds, communities, and regions; • advances toward zero-net energy design & retrofits;
• lessons from biology and the importance of regenerative approaches; and • the benefits of moving beyond LEED to living buildings.
We are extremely fortunate this year to have an opening talk by Dayna Baumeister, PhD, co-founder of the Biomimicry Guild sponsored by the Dartmouth Sustainability Initiative with funding from the Morgan Family Foundation.
The keynote will be given by David Orr, PhD, Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College and sponsored by the Dartmouth Environmental Studies Department as The George Link Jr. Environmental Awareness Lecture.
On the second day of the event, attendees will have the opportunity to extend the learning from the previous day through two hands-on workshops options or a tour of Dartmouth College's high performance buildings. One workshop will be a design charette for the student Sustainable Living Center at Dartmouth run by architects from the highly-regarded firm, Kieran Timberlake Associates. The second workshop will be a Naked Table building workshop organized by the Sustainable Hanover with renowned fine furniture maker, Charles Shakleton. Through these interactive events, attendees will experience sustainable design in practice.
