Timberline Residence

Architect // Oak Point Associates

Description

The Timberline Residence was a design opportunity born from a devastating fire that destroyed the previous (1980's era) house while the owners were away. The 4,850 square foot new home, designed by Oak Point Associates, was placed in the same location on the steeply sloping site, and engages the landscape with a multi-level design. The careful placement of windows and outdoor gathering space provides mountain views from every room in the house and bathes the interior spaces with warm natural light. The materials chosen for the project were intended to evoke the natural woodland and rocky landscape and included ash wood (sourced on site), pine board cladding, poplar boards and solid laminated fir; as well as boardfinish concrete, ground-and-polished concrete, and cork. The project was completed in 2021.

Saint Sebastian Hall

Architect // Oak Point Associates

Description

Saint Sebastian Hall is a 17,000 square foot multi-purpose facility designed by Oak Point Associates. The project is located on the campus of Saint Patrick Academy, an historic Pre-K to Grade 8 school located in Portsmouth. Designed to fulfill the need for additional space and amenities, the facility houses a spacious gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, and tennis, bleacher seating for spectators, locker rooms, two flexible learning spaces, a multipurpose platform for presentations and performing arts, storage rooms, and support spaces. The design boasts large clerestory windows that bring in abundant natural daylight to create a bright, comfortable environment and to reduce the demand for artificial lighting during the day. An interactive ‘sports wall’ is incorporated into the south elevation’s construction assembly to extend the building’s program to the exterior and provide a backdrop for children to kick a soccer ball against or practice their accuracy while throwing a lacrosse ball.

Jury Comments

The plan is clear and logical - the architects show restraint in not allowing the project to become overly complicated. Sectionally the shed roof plays off of traditional and modern examples and provides wonderful daylighting to the interiors. The warmth of the wood ceiling is an appropriate use of timber, and along with color, creates an interior the jury would enjoy spending time experiencing. The jury commented that it would have preferred to be sitting inside the project’s conference room rather than meeting via zoom. The jury could imagine seeing the building lit up at night serving as a wonderful first impression to visitors to The University of Maine at Fort Kent campus. The jury appreciated the clarity of the plan and section drawings submitted. Durable and robust materials appear to enable this humble structure to have a long lifespan.
