2023 Design Awards

Chris Baker

Chris Baker, a St. Louis native, practices architecture in Vero Beach, Florida for nearly twenty years.  One of three partners with Moor, Baker & Associates Architects, P.A. Chris began her tenure with the firm as a new grad from the University of Kansas in 2004.  The firm’s founding partners, husband and wife team, Peter Moor and Mary Juckiewicz, introduced Chris to what she is most passionate about today; making beautiful and enduring places guided by the wisdom of classical traditions.  The firm has received several distinguished design awards including the Palladio and Addison Mizner Awards and has been featured in a handful of recent books including, “Beachside: The Architecture of Windsor” and “At Home on the Water.”  Chris has been an active member of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art for over fifteen years, and now sits on the Board of the Florida Chapter.  Outside of her practice, Chris enjoys spending time with her two teenage sons and husband, Aaron, in their small coastal town of Melbourne, Florida.


John Burse, FAIA

John Burse, FAIA, is a principal at Mackey Mitchell Architects in St. Louis, Missouri, and oversees the design for many higher-ed projects, including dining, residence halls, performing arts spaces, campus master plans, and student centers. John’s passion is design that fosters community, with an emphasis on planning and design as a collaborative journey taken with each client. A citizen architect with infectious enthusiasm, John advocates for community through activism, leadership, and design. Within neighborhoods, cities, and campuses, his creativity and vision have energized and revitalized communities into vibrant destinations that are welcoming and inspiring. His advocacy for sustainable and equitable development contributed to recognition of the Old North St. Louis neighborhood by the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation, HUD, EPA, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. His designs for student life facilities have been recognized with national awards, including several Association of College Unions International’s (ACUI) Facility Design Awards and American Institute of Architects (AIA) awards. John Burse joined Mackey Mitchell Architects in 1997 and was named a principal in 2005. He was a 2004 recipient of the AIA National Young Architects Award was elevated to the College of Fellows in April of 2017. 


Chip Crawford

Chip Crawford is a practice builder, creative thinker, and problem solver.  An award-winning landscape architect, Chip is leading some of the world’s most complex planning, landscape architecture, and urban design projects. A true collaborator, he connects with clients and has a unique ability to stimulate creative thinking and problem solving, bringing proven expertise and the freshest thinking to the table.  He has dedicated his career to being a steward for the public realm and creating inspiring places that recognizes the value in of all people. Chip’s experience is at every scale, from the planning of large new cities, community planning, streetscapes, academic and corporate campus planning and design, greenways and parks, to site specific landscape architectural design on projects all over the world. Chip has led or played a major role in over 85 award winning projects. Chip is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, a 10-year Board member and Past President of the Landscape Architecture Foundation, past ULI Chair of Mission Advancement and Chair for the St. Louis District Council, and a Kansas State University Alumni Fellow. A frequent speaker and event leader, Chip has presented and led events at ULI, ASLA, Extreme LA, CoreNet Global, LAF, and is a frequent guest at University design programs.


Avik K. Guha, AIA

Avik K. Guha, AIA, NCARB, NOMA, CDT, LEED Green Assoc, serves as a project manager at Shears Adkins Rockmore Architects in Denver, working on mixed-use residential projects along the Colorado front range. Prior to this, Avik worked on a variety of project typologies at Roth Sheppard Architects in Denver and Mackey Mitchell Architects in St. Louis. Previous work includes several government projects, including a national-level forensics lab for the Canadian government, the Blue Moon Brewing Company RiNo microbrewery and restaurant, TradeCraft Industries shipping container co-work offices, Firestone Police Department and Courts facility, and the Olin Business School at Washington University in Saint Louis. He earned Bachelor of Design (Architecture) and Bachelor of Science (Psychology) degrees from the University of Florida, and Master of Architecture and Master of Construction Management degrees from Washington University in Saint Louis. Avik is an active member and volunteer with the American Institute of Architects and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, was the AIA Colorado / NCARB State Licensing Advisor from 2018-2021 and is licensed in Colorado and Missouri. 


Katherine Hogan

Katherine Hogan is co-owner and principal of Katherine Hogan Architects, based in Raleigh, North Carolina. As architect and educator, Katherine approaches each project with the belief that good design can happen at any scale and budget. Throughout her career, she has worked on projects of various scales and typologies, including, institutional, commercial, and residential projects. The firm has crafted a diverse body of work, and has received AIA awards at the local, state, and national level for innovative design solutions to complex problems and for using ordinary materials in inventive ways. Katherine Hogan Architects was recently recognized as one of the Architectural League of New York’s 2023 Emerging Voices. The firm was also included in an exhibition at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale entitled A SOUTH FORTY. The show includes 40 regional firms and aims to provide an overview of the current vitality of contemporary architecture and design in the American South. Katherine earned her B.Arch. in 2005 from Syracuse University as a University Scholar, with a minor in Italian language. She also serves as an Advisory Board member to the Syracuse University School of Architecture and has been a Visiting Critic studio professor at the school since 2015.
