Description

The new Beth Israel Lahey Health Exeter Hospital Michael & Jeanne Falzone Center for Cancer Care serves patients undergoing some of the most strenuous cancer treatments. Nestled within two existing hospital buildings and a series of landscaped courtyards, the design for this new construction one-story addition, which includes an 8,000 GSF Oncology Infusion Suite, holistically leverages the healing power of Nature. The new facility unites what was previously two separate departments—Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology—into one cohesive space, upgrades patient care, expands capacity, and allows for uninterrupted patient services, all at a regional level. The easy-to-navigate space that draws on a natural palette of materials provides physical and visual connections to the surrounding terraced landscape and delivers ample natural light. The result is a peaceful and private setting for patients and their families as they focus on an inclusive Mind, Body, and Spirit approach to healing.

Jury Comments

The jury commends this project for its focus on patient wellness and the healing power of nature. The project expertly infills an existing courtyard between two non-descript medical buildings, with a new, glassy outpatient treatment center with a thoughtful patient sequence and a biophilic design. We were particularly drawn to the innovative making of outdoor views from the infusion rooms to landscaped courtyards, through retaining walls cut into the rising grades. This project is commended for its patient-centered design and its ability to create a nurturing and therapeutic atmosphere, making it a deserving recipient of this citation.
