Description

Cove House, a lakefront retreat on Lake Sunapee, forges a harmonious connection between a new home and an existing guest cottage. The design, inspired by the craftsmanship of classic wooden boats, balances livability and artistry. Monumental granite walls define the entry, leading to a light-filled living area with lake views framed by a steel moment frame. Thoughtfully placed windows and doors draw daylight into the heart of the home, illuminating a soaring kitchen, subterranean wine room, and a sculptural granite and steel staircase. The synthesis of nature, light, and meticulous detailing creates an uplifting waterfront sanctuary.

Jury Comments

The sympathetic integration of the house and attention to maintaining the existing mature landscape is evident in the siting, walkways and connections throughout the site which slopes, opens to views and connects other buildings to each other.  The use of local, durable materials is celebrated with an elevated level of craftsmanship on the exterior and interior of the home. The composition of forms on the exterior facades are well balanced with the arrangement of glass, stone and siding presenting a playful composition. On the interior, the varied textures, and views are choreographed for effect, directing the eye to framed views of the Lake and exterior spaces. The detailing of the interior spaces is warm, rich in texture, composed and restrained resulting in restful composition.
