2014 Emerging Professionals Design Competition

The AIANH Emerging Professionals Design Competition (formerly the AIANH Intern/Young Architect Design Competition) was created in 2003 to provide an opportunity for interns and young architectural professionals to strengthen their design skills, gain recognition, and assist a community with their design challenges. It is open to all architectural interns and architects within five years of registration living or working in New England. Participants do not need to be members of AIA.

The idea for the 2014 competition centered on designing a purely theoretical visitor center for Great Island Common in New Castle, New Hampshire. The site has cultural and historical significance to the town, is a gathering place for locals and families throughout the year, and is a common destination for cyclists in the area. The program envisioned the site as a gathering point for the town of New Castle, providing improved service elements, reflecting the town’s military history, and including public amenities. Participants were asked to create a multidimensional community environment with a building that reflects sustainable practices and design ideologies and principles, including building orientation, renewable materials and resources, water management, façade technologies, heating, ventilation and cooling system efficiency, etc. No particular design style was requested, but it was suggested that the building should be sympathetic to coastal designs.

The jury acknowledged the quality of all of the entries, each one of them remarkable in some way. The jury commented that “based on the depth of this field of entries, we feel strongly that New Hampshire's architectural future is in very competent and creative hands."

First Place

Gillian Baresich, TMS Architects, Portsmouth, NH

Jury Comments: The judges thought  the entry was nicely presented, easily understood, and very concise. The development harkens back to the days of a local community with a park center and outbuildings that reflect a true understanding of the site and the area. It encompasses pavilions that are appropriate in scale and proportions to the existing buildings, as well as development that engages the users in new ways to enjoy the park.

The main pavilion was designed so that the building form does not appear large yet still contains many large spaces, which created very unique but usable spaces on the interior.

The addition of a sculpture garden in the historic foundation uses the program requirement but in a way to experience it as an enclosure of the garden…a true jewel on the landscape.

Third Place

Adam Holmes AIA, PDT Architects, Portland, ME

Jury Comments: The jury was impressed with the atmosphere and potential for discovery this submission evoked. The designer paid homage to the history of the site, referencing the WWII bunkers while creating a clear focal point for navigating the park. The night renderings helped explain the contrast of public/private, outside/in from the front and back of the building. A clear entry point in an otherwise blank façade surprises the visitor by opening up to park views and access once inside.
